SERIOUS REQUEST: MBUSII

SERIOUS REQUEST: MBUSII:

Mbusii (real name: Daniel Githinji Mwangi, also known as Captainosis) is one of Ghetto Radio’s star presenters. Earlier this year his daily show – known for its ‘Air Goteana’, ‘Kumba toto’, ‘Kunguta miwa’ and ‘Nyonya chupa chupi chupi’ sections, was moved to the popular drive time slot in the afternoon and early evening. Recently Mbusii added a co-host to his team, the infamous Bonoko, whose experiences as a former street kid are always a starting point for inspiring discussions.

Together with Dj Prince and Dj Musty, Mbusii will spend six days in Nairobi’s Glass House for Serious Request. Unlike his colleagues, Mbusii has previous experience since he was in the Glass House last year, and he’s prepared them for what is to come: “I am telling them not to take this glass house thing too simple, it’s a serious thing. They should be prepared. It’s hard to stay six days without food, but when you trust yourself you can go through. We survived on fruit juice and some water. So many people thought I will not survive because my body is small, they were just saying that after three or four days he’ll be out. But I managed for all six days, so they were very excited.”

Since Mbusii spent the past few months co-hosting with Bonoko on his daily show, will it be hard for him not to see his partner for almost a week?

“I will miss him very much. He’s a funny guy, his voice, how he talks – I will miss him! He will be at the stage side though.”

What does Mbusii expect of this year’s campaign in which listeners are asked to come to the Glass House and donate blood to Red Cross Kenya? “People love each other in Kenya – there’s even an initiative called Kenyans for Kenyans. They will come and donate blood. If you tell them what is the advantage of donating blood, even presenters are donating, Ghetto Radio staff donate, they will just follow.”

The dj has been preparing his fans for what’s to come, and this week he announced a three days leave so he can prepare himself for the stay in the Glass House. During Serious Request Mbusii will be joined by the other reggae dj at Ghetto Radio – dj Musty – but he will play different kinds of music, any song that is requested by those that donate blood.

Mbusii’s first regular radio show after Serious Request will be in the new year, on January 4. So, what’s the first thing that Mbusii will do once he gets out of the Glass House? “My family has to be there, my kid, they will be first because I’ll miss them.”
